Hi all,

Lee Scott addressed the membership of the National Retail Federation at their annual conference in January 2009.   The keynote was recorded and is available on the NRF website as well as through YouTube.  His speech is definitely worth listening to.  I’ve included the link to the NRF below:

Recent retail results

August 30, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Published retail results over the past two weeks have been very interesting from an inventory management perspective. Articles posted in WWD in particular have highlighted the inventory reduction many retailers (both those with good and poor results) have successfully executed to minimize inventory exposure and gross margin erosion as a result of markdowns.

I think it is very interesting to also note that as retailers are cutting back their plans to open new stores, some are actively opening pop-up stores and kiosks. Target (as noted in an article written by Sharon Edelson in WWD published on August 20, 2008) will be opening 4 pop-up stores on September 11, 2008 in New York City: Midtown, Union Square, SoHo, and the East Village. We have certainly seen this before from Target when they opened their pop-up holiday boat before opening their first NYC store, and the pop-up launch of the Isaac Mizrahi line in Rock Center a few years ago. I certainly look forward to visiting these stores since I am often impressed with Target’s temporary locations.
