“Picasso to Koons: The Artist as Jeweler” at the Museum of Arts & Design (MAD)

Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Max Ernst, Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Jeff Koons and Anish Kapoor are some of the 20th century’s greatest and best known artists. What is less well known are the incredible works of sculptural beauty created by these artists in the form of jewelry. Guest curated by Diane Venet (featured in the accompanying video), with over 180 masterpieces, Picasso To Koons: The Artist As Jeweler explores works from an array of artists, not known as jewelers, who have created stunning works of jewelry both reminiscent of their existing artistic vocabulary and in other instances representing a striking departure from their oeuvre. These richly imaginative pieces were never intended for mainstream production, but rather were created as one-of-a-kind pieces or limited editions, that were often personal gifts made for family and friends, revealing an intimate view into the lives of the artists who created them.

Harper’s Bazaar: A Decade of Style

A new exhibit opened at the International Center of Photography titled: Harper’s Bazaar: A Decade of Style.

The exhibition is open now until January 8, 2012.

In the ten years since Glenda Bailey became Editor in Chief of Harper’s Bazaar, she and Creative Director Stephen Gan have carried on the magazine’s tradition of publishing high-impact photography. This exhibition distills that decade into a choice group of nearly thirty images by some of the most important photographers working today, including Peter Lindbergh, Jean-Paul Goude, David Bailey, William Klein, Patrick Demarchelier, Sølve Sundsbø, Tim Walker, Mario Sorrenti, Hiro, Melvin Sokolsky, and Karl Lagerfeld. Among the artists represented are Nan Goldin, Ralph Gibson, and Chuck Close. Along with inventive fashion images in a wide range of styles, from classic to cinematic, there are vivid portraits of designers Marc Jacobs, Karl Lagerfeld, and Diane Von Furstenberg, and celebrities like Daphne Guinness, Lady Gaga, and Julianne Moore. To emphasize the work’s original context and the magazine’s award-winning design, issues in vitrines will display extended stories as well as Bazaar‘s high-impact subscribers’ covers.

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones

Visit the Bard Graduate Center from September 15, 2011 to April 15, 2012 to enjoy this amazing collection of hats.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and hat designer Stephen Jones.

Great interview on performance in the retail industry and supply vs. demand

Marshall Fisher, retail professor at Wharton, was asked questions about his most recent book, “The New Science of Retailing.” Included is some history about the changes that have occurred in the retail industry over the past 40 years – a good overview for students of the fashion industry.

Summer Streets have arrived

Today (August 13th) and next Saturday (August 20th) enjoy a car free meander on foot, roller blades, roller skates or bike in Manhattan from 7am to 1pm starting at the Brooklyn Bridge north to 72nd Street – up Lafayette Street that merges into Fourth Avenue and becomes Park Avenue.

The full length is 7 miles and if you start in Brooklyn – add another 1+ mile for the span across the bridge!
